Bob Thorton was the original founder of Gold Rush Pawnbrokers Inc. He opened up for business at 12 N. Hazel St. in May of 1981. The shop started out small but Bob had a knack for turning whatever he touched into gold. After the first year the business was growing and Bob needed more help. He turned to newly graduated high school teacher, Tim Busby. Tim became part owner in 1982 and helped expand the growing pawn shop. By the late 80s the shop needed more room so they moved down the street to a bigger location at 22 N. Hazel St. Bob unfortunately passed away on Nov. 26 1989 leaving Tim as sole proprietor of the pawn shop. Tim took this challenge head on by expanding the business again, This time though he added the store fronts of 18 & 20 N. Hazel. Tim took the business to new heights and helped make “Gold Rush” a household name all over Vermilion County. After 23 years of pawning and selling Tim decided that he was ready for a new chapter in his life. He started a farm real estate company called Butler, Busby, Hicks Land & Auction Company.
